History of edits

We continue to talk about some features of the new website ... Another of the features of WP2 will show the so-called History of edits. Each object - whether it be aircraft, the pilot or the event will have a special section which will be assembled in chronological order all the changes that occurred during editing of the object. Thus you can always be traced the evolution of editing what, when and by whom it was added, deleted, etc. The same way you can compare the current version of the object with the older. This will be a very useful tool for project participants who are actively engaged in editing content.

Sandbox

The Latest developments include a new feature to be called the "Sandbox" wherein models and interfaces shall be explored that will enable users to edit and add different database objects.

This will add an element of personal editorial freedom to the user, albeit that some control will be exercised by a moderator, before being approved for publication. This is not to say that all the actions taking place in the "Sandbox" will be strictly controlled by the moderators as the main purpose of the feature is to encourage the users to pursue a certain degree of creativity and expression of personal preferences while researching their objects.

Good news!

Dear Friends!

We are updating you on the progress thus far on the New Wings Palette Project.

Despite the lack of news, due to a manpower shortage, the project is going forward.
In late Autumn of 2010 we came to an agreement with programmer team to develop a engine for the new website. Also we came to an agreement with Glyph Design Studio to design new website appearance.

We anticipate a "DEMO" version of the new site will be premiered in Spring 2011, which will embody the kernel of the new system and a sample of the interface, where anyone can get familiar with the basic features of the new Portal. The launch of the Definitive version of the site is projected to launch in Summer 2011.

The basic structure of the site, as well as basic functionality, has already be defined.

Dear Friends,

We continue active organizational and design work. The introduction and launch of the project will be carried out in several stages. The basic structure of the site, as well as basic functionality (available immediately at the end of the first phase of designing and launching the site in test operation), has already be defined.

Below is a summary listing the key features and functions of the site:

- Multi-user system with co-ordination of rights and privileges
- The mechanism of add/change data by the public
- Mechanism of discussion and comment.
- Basic Content Types - profiles, photos, 3d-art
- Easy navigation
- Search System

Basic data structures and partitions:

- Developers of aircraft *
- Types of aircraft
- Operators of aircraft
- Item of aircraft (including personal history, profiles, photos)
- Pilots
- Aircraft carriers
- Wars
- Events (air combats, accidents, etc.)

* aircraft = airplane, helicopter, etc.

The existing basic version of the site will begin its normal operation. After the immediate launch of the new website, there will be a lot of work to convert huge number of accumulated data to a new format. We hope for your help.

The negotiations with the development team continue. Any results will be announced in the basic version of the site. Follow our news!

Best wishes,

We are beginning a complete reconstruction of the "Wings Palette" website.

Dear friends!

I have been pondering the concept of further developing the "Wings Palette" website, for some years. In fact, it will be a new project based on fundamentally different mechanisms for collecting, organizing and presenting information. The guiding principle of the site will remain: to benefit all aviation enthusiasts.

What will "Wings Palette" look like after reconstruction?

It will have an easy to use interface that provides access to a connected knowledge base containing information about any significant objects and events in aviation history - on each specific aircraft or pilot, air battles and famous flights, airports and squadrons. Over time, we will, significantly increase the amount of factual material - profiles, photos, drawings and schemes. There will be new and interesting sections and increased ease of navigation and search.

One of the key innovations will be maximum interactivity.

Active members of the project can further complement and improve any aspects of the overall framework. Visitors to the site will be the main driving force behind the project - its editors and correspondents, its authors and researchers. Our task is to lay the development foundations: your task - to help us as much as possible to implement it.

We value your ideas.

Currently we are developing new specifications for the site. You can help with this. If you have interesting ideas and suggestions - contact us or leave comment here. Your opinion will be taken into account, interesting suggestions will be incorporated into the development of the project.

Now we are at the beginning of a difficult, but fascinating path that with your help lead us to create a completely new and universal mechanism for studying the history of aviation.

Sincerely,
Grigory Ivanov
